For vet clinics: when a client is moving with their pet

Your client has a date and a country, and the papers for both run through your clinic. Here is what India's quarantine office asks a vet to sign, which dates have to line up, and where to send the family for everything else.

For AQCS, with the pet7 days before the flight
  1. Health certificate Fit to fly, by road, air or train, from any local registered vet
  2. Microchip certificate The chip goes in before the rabies vaccine that counts
  3. Vaccination record Or the mother's, if he's too young for a vaccine
The export certificate AQCS issues is valid for 10 days, so a fitness certificate dated close to the appointment is the most useful one.

What AQCS asks the vet for

Every dog or cat leaving India goes to the AQCS quarantine office with its papers, about a week before the flight. Three of those papers come from the vet: a health certificate saying the animal is fit to fly, by road, air or train, from any local registered vet; the microchip certificate; and the vaccination record. If the pet is too young for a vaccine, AQCS asks for the mother's vaccination record instead.

AQCS examines the animal and issues the export certificate, which is valid for 10 days. So the fitness certificate is most useful dated close to that appointment, and we'll tell you the appointment date as soon as it's booked.

The dates that have to line up.

The chip goes in first, before the rabies vaccine that counts. After that, each country sets its own clock, and the blood draw is usually where your dates and ours meet.

For the UK, the titre sample is taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccine and has to read at least 0.5 IU/ml at an approved lab. The pet can't enter until three months after the day the blood was drawn. For the USA, the sample goes to a CDC-approved lab at least 30 days after the first valid vaccine and at least 28 days before the dog lands. For Singapore it's at least 90 days and within 12 months before export. Europe's antibody test follows Annex IV of Regulation (EU) No 576/2013 at an approved lab, and the wait after it is set by the member state.

We send you the timeline for each pet, counted back from the flight, so you know which date is the draw and which is the fitness certificate before the family walks in.

Moving inside India

A domestic move needs the vet too. The Transport of Animals Rules want a qualified vet's certificate that a dog or cat is fit to travel and shows no sign of infectious disease, rabies included. Without it, the carrier has to refuse the animal.

Your patient stays your patient

We work with the family's own vet wherever the destination allows it, or with a government approved vet where it doesn't. The vaccines, the chip, the blood draw and the fitness certificate stay with you. We take the rest off the family, from the permits and the AQCS appointment to the crate, the airline and the far end. And we don't sedate pets for travel, so nobody will ask you for a sedative on our behalf.

Sending a family to us

Give them our email, pets@ikan.com, or point them to the QR code on our counter card, and ask them to bring the date and the country. We'll write back to the family, and with their permission we'll copy you on the timeline so your dates and ours match.

Hi, I'd like to move my pet. I'm a vet, writing about a client's pet. (Found you via vet-clinic)

Written for you. Change anything before you send.

For your waiting room.

Ask and we'll send you a counter card and an A3 waiting room poster, both with a QR code that tells us the family came from a vet. If you'd like a vaccination book with your clinic's name next to ours, tell us, because it's something we want to make with the first clinics who ask.
