The paperwork

Quarantine: what it is, and where it applies

Some routes need a quarantine place booked before he flies, and on others a live permit decides. Here's what that means, and why we never print a no-quarantine badge.

Quarantine isn't a yes or no badge on a destination. Where a country needs it, the facility, the length, the booking and the papers all belong in the file before he flies.

Route by route

Singapore
At least 30 days at the Animal Quarantine Centre, booked in advance, and a rabies vaccine again on arrival.
Malaysia
A MAQIS quarantine booking number goes on the import permit application, so the place comes first.
Australia
Post-entry quarantine near Melbourne, at least 10 days if the identity check came before the blood test, at least 30 if not.
New Zealand
At least 10 days on arrival, booked ahead.
Hong Kong
The Special Permit terms for India's group decide whether a government quarantine place is needed.
South Africa
The live import permit decides whether it's quarantine, further control or neither.
United States
For a dog, a booked place at a CDC-registered facility at the arrival airport. Without a valid titre, that booking includes 28 days of quarantine.

Where he'd actually be

At an approved facility we arrange and stay in touch with, not wherever has a kennel free. The same team that planned the departure runs the file through it, which matters most here, because this is the stretch where you're in the country and he isn't yet.
